Cinema Embassy, Bologna, Italy

by Andrea Sesta, a view of Cinema Embassy, Bologna, Italy

This place used to be a quite famous cinema in Bologna and it was closed a few years ago, probably around 2005 (I tried to find the exact date on the web, but I couldn’t find any specific information). During these years several renewal projects have been proposed for the Embassy, but nothing has actually been set in place so far. In order to free the abandoned space, the cinema has been occupied by student collectives more than once, even though they weren’t able to keep the building because of police interventions.
This state of abandonment is a shame because the cinema is really huge (I can’t tell the exact dimensions, but at least several hundreds of m2) and young people in Bologna are continuously demanding space for creativity that they don’t have.

Embassy is only one of the cinemas in Bologna that closed in the past 10 years: I remember for sure Nosadella, Imperiale and Metropolitan (but there are many more, here‘s a list of some of them, if you know others please write them down in the post’s comments).
Some of these places have been converted (for example the ex-Imperiale in via Indipendenza now host a Zara shop), but others like the Embassy have been left in decadence. The Embassy case it’s particularly strange because the area it sits in has been object of a very important renewal project, that completely changed the district: why the Embassy has not been included in the wider project? As usual, many unanswered questions remain related to abandoned buildings…

  1. This place is very facinating and as written above the entire area it was object of an important renewal plan. Some days ago it appears on a newspaper the news that Claudio Abbado ask Renzo Piano to design an auditorium for music exhibitions inside this building. You can find more infos
