downtown Milan, Italy

by Andrea Sesta, an abandoned parking downtown Milan, a few blocks from Duomo

This place is incredible: we’re in via Rovello right next to via Dante, in the very center of Milan. The parking is right in front of the Algerian Consulate, but seems abandoned by many years.

San Giuliano Milanese, Milan, Italy

by Marco Pieri, a hotel built in 1975 for Italy ’90, never finished and destroyed in 2008

This building should have been a hosting structure for Italy ’90 world championship. It was built in 1975, but has never been finished and was destroyed the 06th of April 2008 at 10:30.

This photograph is part of the project “MenAtWindows” by Marco Pieri. We talked about this project in our previous post. What do you think about it? Write your opinions in the post’s comments.
MenAtWindows revives and dwells in a forgotten, lifeless urban space, through a collective performance that turns not only into a photographic-click, but in a truly lived artistic experience. The abandoned buildings are temporally filled up with significance, by means of addition and subtraction.
It is an instant work of art: the protagonists of the performance are the men in red; they repopulate the building for a moment, occupying empty and colourless spaces, like a vital lymph that restarts to circulate inside the building. The purpose of the artist is to take possession once again of deserted places, metropolitan realities left without purpose, where art’s goal is to fill and revitalize the emptiness.

Castalla, Alicante, Spain

a view of the center of Castalla, a small city near Alicante

Castalla is a small city located in the inner province of Alicante, with a population of approximately 8,000 residents. In the center of Castalla there is a castle and the historic center all around it.
This part of the city has been abandoned over the years by the local administrations, leaving it in a state of ruin, without a special planning for its revitalization and rehabilitation. The different public administrations have built (during the years of spanish economical growth) new buildings outside the city and, in 2003, they also built some housing for foreigners.

Scorrano, Lecce, Italy

by Paolo Margari, an abandoned house in Scorrano (Lecce, Italy)

Abandoned building surrounded by a beautiful sunrise in Scorrano, a small village in Puglia, Italy. It seems like a small tower, may be for defense or for religious purpose: does anybody know anything about it?

Falconara, Sicily, Italy

by Robyn Hooz, an abandoned house in Falconara (Caltanissetta, Italy)

Ruins of an old, abandoned house in the far south of Italy, Sicily. Standing in golden fields of corn, in front of an immense sea, a lonely witness of this land full of contrasts and contradictions. But absolutely beautiful.
Nobody wants to live here?

Abandoned Mine, Rio Marina, Isola d’Elba, Italy

by Giacomo Beccari, an abandoned mine in Rio Marina, Isola d’Elba, Italy

The Elba island was well known from very ancient times for its iron resources and its valued mines: from the Etruscan in the 8th century b.C. to the modern civilization, iron have been extracted and, through the centuries, metallurgy business spread across the island, involving the local population in the working process. The steel market crisis during 80′s caused the closure of all the mines that are abandoned since then, like the one in the picture.

Gutted Building, Madrid, Spain

by Giacomo Beccari, a gutted building waiting for interior reconstruction in Madrid, Spain

An example of possible living in plaza de San Ildefonso in Madrid, Spain: the old building has been gutted, the memory of his past is kept by the external skin and the inner part is realized completely from scratch.
A woman already lives there!! :-)
